The telescopic handler or just telehandler is a heavy duty equipment which is popular in both the construction and agriculture businesses. These equipment are rather similar in both function and appearance to the forklift, except it more closely resembles a crane. The telehandler provides increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that could extend upwards as well as forwards from the vehicle. The operator has the ability to attach numerous attachments on the boom's end. Some of the most common attachments comprise: a muck grab, a bucket, pallet forks or a lift table.
To be able to move loads through places that are normally not reachable for a standard forklift. The telehandler uses pallet forks as their most common attachment. For instance, telehandlers can move cargo to and from locations that are not normally accessible by regular forklift units. These devices also have the ability to remove palletized cargo from in a trailer and place these loads in high locations, such as on rooftops for instance. Before, this situation mentioned above would require a crane. Cranes can be very expensive to use and not always a practical or time-efficient option.
One more advantage is also the telehandlers largest drawback: since the boom extends or raises when the machinery is bearing a load, it also acts as a lever and causes the vehicle to become quite unbalanced, despite the counterweights on the rear. This translates to the lifting capacity decreasing quickly as the working radius increases. The working radius is the distance between the center of the load and the front of the wheels.
For example, a vehicle which has a five thousand pound capacity with the boom retracted might be able to safely lift only as heavy as four hundred pounds when it is completely extended with a low boom angle. The same unit with a five thousand pound lift capacity which has the boom retracted might be able to easily support as much as 10,000 lb. with the boom raised up to 70.
England initially pioneered the telehandler within Horley, Surrey. The Matbro Company developed these equipment from their articulated cross country forestry forklifts. Initially, they had a centrally mounted boom design on the front section. This placed the cab of the driver on the machine's back portion, like in the Teleram 40 unit. The rigid chassis design with the cab located on the side and a rear mounted boom has since become increasingly more famous.
Side shifter: Side shifters are attachments which allow operators to laterally position the attachment arms for more efficient load placement.
Forklift fork Positioner: A type of hydraulic attachment that helps position the forks simultaneously or separately according to the size of the loads is known as a positioner. It relieves lift trucks operators from having to manually adjust the forks.
Pole Attachments: Pole attachments are utilized to lift carpet rolls.
Telescopic forklift forks: These attachments enable the driver to unload and load vehicles from a single side. They permit the handling of two differently-sized pallets at the same time and are very handy for double-deep racking.
Forklift carton clamp attachments: These hydraulic attachments make high-volume carton handling easier through the application of uniform clamping force. They are outfitted with arm pads lined with four-way reversible rubber. A backrest to the loads helps prevent damage to the loads.
Slip sheet attachment: Slip sheet forklift is an alternative to pallet systems. This hydraulic transport and storing system clamps onto the slip sheet so as to draw it onto a thin and wide metal fork. Useful for shipping overseas and for intra-corporate deliveries.
Man Basket: A platform which slides onto forklift forks is known as a man basket. It is designed to raise employees. Safety features include brackets used for attaching safety harnesses and railings to be able to avoid falls.
